Lesbian Game Changers and Coming Out Day!

Lesbian Game Changers and Coming Out Day!

In honor of National Coming Out Day, Check out Game Changers – Lesbians You Should Know About, a new school resource book featuring women over 50 who  made significant contributions to LGBTQ Culture. It’s a richly designed collection of biographies and defining moments, colorful illustrated timelines and major accomplishments of thirty fascinating American lesbians.

The goal of this project is to insure that every public high school student in the San Francisco Bay Area has access to school resources that provide a positive representation of LGBTQ people.

Why Now?
Recently, the California State Board of Education voted to implement the FAIR Act, a 2011 law that mandates including LGBT history and social studies in public school curriculum. Resources are hard to come by and are needed! With help from many of you and others I raised over $20,000 to create the book and give it into 48 public high schools in San Francisco, Marin, Berkeley and Oakland, serving nearly 50,000 students!

“It has been amazing to watch certain students’ reaction to the book who are able to see a representation of their own identities in their school environment.” — JESSICA COLVIN, WELLNESS DIRECTOR FOR THE TAMALPAIS UNIFIED HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT

Who is in it?
Game Changers will feature a diverse cross-section of women who contributed to lesbian culture. Kate Kendell,  Kathy Wolfe, Donna Hitchens, Crystal Jang, Franco Stevens, Joan Antonuccio, Kathy Belge, Diane Anderson-Minshall,  Mariah Hansen, Jewelle Gomez, Page Hodel, Monica Palacios, Cheryl Dunye, Toni Armstrong, Jenni Olson, Marga Gomez, Judy Dlugacz and Terry Wolverton— just to name a few.

2018 INDIE Book Award Winner!

Game Changers won first place in the LGBTQ2 (Lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/queer/2-spirited) category! The Next Generation Indie Book Awards is the largest Not-for-Profit book awards program for indie authors and independent publishers. It was established to recognize and honor the most exceptional independently published books in over 70 different categories. Game Changers will now be listed in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards Catalog which will be distributed to thousands of book buyers, media, and others!

What’s next?
I am currently seeking sponsors at ANY level of giving! I’m looking to raise $20,000 by November. These funds will cover the cost of printing books to give to every Bay Area public high school! My goal is to provide two books to all 267 public high schools – serving over 200,000 students in Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, Sonoma, Napa and Solano counties by the end of the 2018/19 school year!

Lesbian Game Changers is grateful to Our Families Coalition who is now our fiscal sponsor,  which means your contribution is a write-off!

MAKE YOUR TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATION HERE. Donors who would like to sponsor at the level of $100 or more will have your name listed in the book (optional). Donations of $25 or more will also receive a free 11×17 poster! THANK YOU!

And on a lighter note about Coming out Day – here are a few words from one of our featured Lesbian Game Changers Monica Palacios: “Happy National Coming Out Day! We’ll be putting up the tree and exchanging gifts. Then we’ll gather in the town square and dance to all songs by Sylvester.”
