When I heard about the Curve celebration to kick off Pride this year, I got excited. An in-person event at a groovy club to celebrate all things Curve! YESS!!!! There is a lot to celebrate:
1) Franco Stevens (our very own Lesbian Game Changer!) was the 2022 winer of GLAAD’s Barbara Gittings Award for Excellence in LGBTQ+ Media!
2) The first fabulous year of The Curve Foundation, a groundbreaking organization that empowers lesbian, queer women, trans people, and non-binary people to share our culture and our stories, connect with each other, and raise visibility.
3) Jen Rainin and Rivkah Beth Medow, co-producers and directors of the hit film Ahead of the Curve, a documentary that tells the story of Franco Stevens, one of the most influential women in lesbian history you’ve never heard of and the impact her work continues to have today. In 1990, Franco created a safe place for lesbians in the form of Curve magazine. The magazine helped build a foundation for many intersectional movements being led by today’s activists in the face of accelerating threats to the LGBTQ community.
The night included unicorn races, delightful drag and dancing to the sounds of DJ Rockaway and DJ LadyRyan to benefit The Curve Foundation. What a blast it was to dress up, catch up with old friends and meet new ones face to face! The event was very classy, with great bites, music and fun games.
Stay tuned for more great work from the folks at all things Curve!
