Oscar Highlights from the Queer Señorita

Patricia Arquette winning for Best Supporting Actress and her equality for women, speech and watching Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lopez who were sitting side by side responding enthusiastically to her.

StreepjloCommon and John Legend’s powerful performance of their song Glory and then their potent acceptance speech “we live in the most incarcerated country in the world” for Best Song. Lady Gaga doing her outstanding tribute to The Sound of Music in her poofy quinceañera dress and then introducing Julie Andrews and watching them hug for a long time.

Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu winning for Birdman, Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture. He accepted the last award of the evening leaving us with: “I want to dedicate this award for my fellow Mexicans, the ones who live in Mexico. I pray that we can build the government that we deserve. And the ones living in this country who are part of the latest generation of immigrants in this country. I just pray that they can be treated with the same dignity and respect of the ones who came before and built this incredible immigration nation.”

Although I thought the host Doogie Howser MD—wasn’t funny—I appreciate that he is an out gay man.

MESSED UP MOMENT: Sean Penn’s “green card” joke when announcing Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu for Best Picture—was messed up and totally racist. Even though these guys are friends and jab each other like this—the rest of the world doesn’t know this. And this was a supreme monumental moment in Alejandro’s filmmaking career—he deserved total respect. Also it’s historical for Mexicanos, Chicanos, People of Color–Penn should have just played it straight and announced the winner in a respectful way. He would have been respectful to the other filmmakers if they had won. White dude stop attacking Brown people! ‪#‎KickSeanPennInTheBallsAFewTimes‬

Next year let’s have Chicana/Latina filmmakers, producers, actresses, writers—winning awards.

Si se puede!
